The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly, entered into force in 1981. The Convention forms a part of the international human rights protection system by encouraging member states to take pragmatic measures for realizing equality between women and men and protecting women’s fundamental rights in the political, economic and social spheres.
